Dien Bien Phu

Located in Northern Vietnam near the Laotian border, it was the site of the final major battle of the first Indochina war. The French garrison at Dien Bien Phu fell in May 1954 after 54-day siege by the Viet Minh, who pounded the forces in the valley below with heavy artillery they had carted through the jungle and over mountains. Though Dien Bien Phu was a crushing psychological and tactical defeat, only approximately 4% of the French Union Forces in Indochina were lost during the battle.
