OPLAN 34A
A program of covert operations against North Vietnam designed to convince Hanoi to desist from supplying and supporting the
Viet Cong in South Vietnam. The measures undertaken included:
- Electronic intelligence collection
- Psychological operations – leaflet drops and radio broadcasts
- Sabotage operations in North Vietnam
President Johnson approved OPLAN 34A in January 1964 and the covert actions, which began the following month, played a role in the
Tonkin Gulf incident.
