The WWII era jungle sweater was made from olive green (OG-208) wool and was designed to be worn at night in place of sweat-soaked fatigues or under the combat jacket in cool weather. Unfortunately the wool tended to absorb moisture, which made the sweater heavy and difficult to dry. Consequently it was superseded by a nylon version in 1966, though pilots in Vietnam continued to favor the wool shirt due to risk of the nylon melting in a cockpit fire.
