The U.S. supplied the South Vietnamese Army with surplus stocks of the cotton M1945 load carrying equipment in the early stages of the war. However, the attachment of the combat field pack to the suspenders was not good and as result ARVN soldiers routinely carried the pack on a separate set of shoulder straps.1
