Military Payment Certificates - 641 Series

On arrival in Vietnam all MACV personnel had to exchange their U.S. Dollars for either Military Payment Certificates (MPCs) or Piastres. MPCs, also called "scrip", were for use only in American facilities and only authorized patrons of those facilities were allowed to possess them. The use of MPCs was designed to prevent the enemy from obtaining U.S. dollars and thereby limit its ability to purchase weapons and supplies on the international market. The 641 series MPC was issued in 5c, 10c, 25c, 50c, $1, $5 and $10 denominations between 31st August 1965 and 21st October 1968.1
