Blood Chit
Downed aviators used blood chits as a last resort after all other methods of evasion and survival had failed. The XM-61-1 Blood Chit, for use in Southeast Asia and West Central Pacific, measured 10 by 20 inches and was printed with the following message in 14 languages:
"I am a citizen of the United States of America. I do not speak your language. Misfortune forces me to seek your assistance in obtaining food, shelter and protection. Please take me to someone who will provide for my safety, and see that I am returned to my people. My government will reward you."
Each chit was printed with a unique control number that was given to the person who provided assistance and allowed him or her to claim the reward.
