The Type IV Survival Kit was designed for airmen as an aid to subsistence upon forced landings in remote and hostile environments, though engineers and tunnel rats also used it as tool. The kit consisted of an ax (pictured), sharpening stone, burning lens and a leg strap. The ax carrying case could be attached to a pistol belt.
