Throughout most of the Vietnam War the
M16 rifle magazine had a capacity of twenty 5.56mm cartridges, however, a
thirty-round version was introduced towards to the end of the conflict. The metal 20-round magazine weighed only 0.2lb when empty and 0.7lb when loaded.
Natick Labs specifically developed the
M1956 /
M1967 M16A1 cases and the
Lightweight Ammunition Vest for carrying the 20-round magazines, though riflemen in Vietnam also often used
bandoleers and
canteen covers etc.
