The 2nd pattern M16 ammunition case was produced in nylon rather than cotton and featured a plastic spring catch fastener. Like its predecessor it was designed to accommodate four 20-round magazines for the M16 rifle. The pouch attached to the pistol belt via two slide keepers and had a supporting strap that clipped to the metal loop on the suspenders. In common with the majority of ammunition cases it had strips on both sides for attaching hand grenades.
