The WWII era plywood packboard featured a laced-in cotton backrest and was used for carrying various pieces of kit such as mortar rounds and radios. Although they were a favorite of the Marines in Vietnam, the Army's use of the packboard declined soon after the introduction of the Lightweight Rucksack and Frame.
