The development of the H back design cotton M1956 suspenders began in 1954 with the Quarter Master Corps experimental
EX-54 load carrying system. Like the experimental version both the front and rear straps of the suspenders were terminated with hooks, however, the front
belt hooks featured integral loops for attaching the sleeping gear
carrier rather than separate rings.
The bottom edge of each shoulder pad had a metal loop that connected to the supporting strap of an
ammunition case, whilst the web keeper on top of the pad was often used to attach a first aid
pouch. The suspenders were issued in 3 sizes in Vietnam: Regular, Long and X-Long.
