Formed in 1966, Helicopter Attack (Light) Squadron Three provided close air support to U.S and Allied forces operating in the Mekong Delta region during the Vietnam War. Their shoulder sleeve insignia featured a fire-breathing wolf equipped with a trident1 and a shield emblazoned with the Ace of Spades, the card of death. The trident represented the Seawolves nautical heritage, whilst the red and yellow of the shield were taken from the flag of South Vietnam.1. Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, carried a trident.
